On a plane to Moscow, Boris, the Russian FSB agent XIII knew in his youth during his infiltration in Cuba, reminds our hero of an old mission that his memory had erased. By stimulating Jason Mac Lane's lost memory, the Russian hopes to discover the hiding place of old evidence of a conspiracy that could be useful in relaunching his career. 48 pages. French.
In 1984, during the Cold War, XIII was sent to kill a Russian presidential candidate deemed a little too conservative by the American government as part of the plan to warm East-West relations. But the planned attack during a reception at Spaso House, the Moscow residence of the American ambassador, had failed due to the fault of an undercover KGB agent, Nina Orekhova, alias "Babotchka" ("butterfly"). The latter, seeing Jason Mac Lane as a young idealist, slips into his hands a microcassette containing evidence of complicity between Russian and American billionaires in a trafficking of arms and military technology between the Soviets and venal Americans who have common interests in maintaining tensions between the two superpowers. XIII will manage to escape and will be sent back to Cuba by the CIA (which he will soon leave "for Maria". But that's another story... see volumes 9 and following in the series.)
Today, the past comes knocking at our amnesiac's door. Eager to get their hands on the microcassette that XIII has forgotten even existed, the GRU, aka the Russian military intelligence services, intends to force a trigger in Jason Mac Lane's memory. But as soon as they arrive in Moscow, XIII is kidnapped by bikers led by Nina who works for the FSB. Nina offers XIII a deal. She promises to free him from the GRU and the hold that the Mayflower Foundation has on his brain if, in exchange, he helps her find the famous microcassette. Together, they will be able to help Carrington win the next American presidential elections and finally promote a climate of détente between the two oldest enemies in international politics...
