Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) is an example of the Viennese Jugendstil style. With the subject's face emerging from the background like a dream, this portrait is hauntingly beautiful. Confiscated by the Nazis in the 1940s, the painting was recovered and is now on display in New York.
